Lattes Before Life Plans

Updated: May 26, 2025

May Saturday 3

Snuggled into the heart of a vibrant community, a small bakery can save a student from burnout.

Brot Bakery, located in Salter Point, serves as a staple for exhausted parents, a hotspot for post-gym catch-ups and a caffeine saviour for overworked students.

On Saturday, after an exhausting week of full-time work while juggling uni, I headed to my local cafe for a caffeine hit with my mum and younger sister (who isn't so little anymore).

I ordered a large cappuccino with oat milk, my sister followed my lead, with full cream milk, while my mum sipped on a chai latte.

So, where does my local gem rank?

Coffee verdict

  • My coffee was slightly burnt, however, my sister's was pretty perfect.

  • My mum's chai was a little sweet, but that could just be her taste buds.

My favourite part of going to grab a coffee with friends and family is the ritual, along with the conversations.

As a 20-something Aussie girl, I’m constantly reflecting on life, chatting and gossiping with the people I love.

Heading towards my impending college graduation, I have struggled with feeling a huge lack of direction, and a sense of failure that, after all my hard work, good grades, and extracurriculars, I may not actually thrive in what I was working for.

Chatting to my mum and sister, I realised this feeling is not only okay, it is also extremely common.

Social media encourages people to have the perfect life, plan, and career. The reality? It's more normal to feel like a fish out of water.

Although my problems are far from figured out, my coffee ritual, family, and cafe gossip make me feel less alone.

What felt like a life crisis was actually just an everyday problem made easier through chatting with my sister and my mum over coffee at my local coffee shop.
